The h Field Bet is the casino's biggest way of deceiving its newcomers. The largest section of the table labeled "Field" with the numbers 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 and 12 is where an inexperienced player may place his chips in hopes that the next roll will be one of those numbers and not a 5, 6, 7 or 8.
Some casino's spice up the bet by offering a 2:1 payout if a 2 or 12 are rolled, but this still doesn't cover the statistical outcome. 5, 6, 7 and 8 have 20 different possible rolls while 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, and 12 have only 16 different rolls.
The house edge for a Field Bet is 5.26%, making it a nearly useless craps bet.
If the casino offers a triple payout when a 12 is rolled and a double for 2, then the house edge for such a gambling game is reduced to 2.77%.
