The Electronic Casino Games at the Southland Gaming and Racing Facility

On June 7th, 2008, despite the existing constitutional ban on different forms of gaming and repeated voter dismissal to casinos and lotteries, "the electronic casino games" enjoyed at Hot Springs and West Memphis have introduced a casino like environment in Arkansas. The Southland Gaming and Racing is a greyhound park but there is no dog racing in sight as players enjoy blackjack and poker.

Because the only gaming allowed in the area is only electronic gaming-other than wagers on dog and horse racing, players will not see any real cards in the gaming floor of the Southland Gaming. But that does not block the racing track from imitating the environment that can be found in casino gaming tables that can be found in Tunica, Mississippi. Troy Keeping, Southland racing track's president and general manager said that they offer the same gaming atmosphere to their customers that can only be found in casinos in Las Vegas, Atlantic City and in nearby states.

Under the existing Arkansas regulations and with the support of the local voters, Oakland Park and Southland can feature electronic games of skill aside fro pari-mutuel gambling at their racing tracks. Blackjack players at the racing tracks can see their cards on individual electronic video screens and the blackjack croupier press a series of electronic buttons in order to hit the cards or list when a player would stand in the game.

Since electronic blackjack, poker and other electronic casino games were permitted to the Arkansas racing tracks in 2006, players have bet more than $600 million according to the state Racing Commission. The additional profit has allowed the Southland racing track to allot more money for advertising and attract customers that usually go to Tunica and Tennessee.
