Princess Group Hotels and Casinos To Build Casino Facility in Guyana

A spokesperson from a gaming organization from Turkey said on July 23rd, 2009 that it will construct the first casino facility in the country of Guyana. Spokesperson Oguz said that the Princess Group Hotels and Casinos will spend a total of $2 million to construct a casino facility and upgrade a local hotel establishment to a five-star hotel facility. The Princess Casino Guyana is expected to create one hundred fifty new jobs.

The Guyana government awarded the organization with a gaming license earlier this year despite opposition from churches about approving different kinds of vice like gambling. Guyana leaders have said that anyone constructing a hotel facility with more than one hundred fifty rooms automatically qualifies for a casino gaming permit as the country struggles to attract more visitors.

Guyana, which is a country of 772,000 people, attracts 250,000 tourists annually. Tayanc said that it might be difficult endeavor to attract more visitors to the country because of the lack of international flights to Guyana and the eco-tourism market of Guyana is still in its initial stages. The Turkey-based gaming organization owns hotel facilities in countries throughout the area including Belize, Suriname and the Dominican Republic.

Guyana has private clubs that offer unofficial betting facilities but this is the first time that the government has given a gaming permit to a gaming group. The gaming facility is expected to open near the country's capital, Georgetown, and only hotel customers will be permitted to play.
