Slots Deal Sealed Between Schwarzenegger and Agua Caliente of Cahuilla Indians

The deal between California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and one of the state's richest Indian tribes, the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians has been sealed.

The deal enables the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians to increase their operating h from 2,000 to 5,000. Along with the increase in slots, they are also allowed to open a 3rd casino in the Palm Springs area.

According to Nancy Conrad, Agua Caliente's Press Secretary, 15% of the slot's earnings will be paid to the state. Hence, the agreement will contribute nearly $2 billion in casino gambling earnings to the state's funds over the next 2 decades.

Schwarzenegger stated that the state's tribe should pay their "fair share" in taxes and this has been his stance since his campaign during the 2003 recall election.

The Agua Caliente administration met the following requirements, which were outlined by the governor: 1. Maximizing the monetary benefits to the state 2. Ensuring protections to local government, including environmental concerns regarding new casino construction 3. Giving workers more protections, including worker's compensation claims.

Once the deal is signed, it merely needs the approval of the state legislature to be finalized.
