Senate President Therese Murray Supports Casino Gaming in Massachusetts

A lot of legislators in the US are feeling that casino gaming will help the economy of their respective states and on October 9th, 2009, Massachusetts Senate President Therese Murray echoed that feeling, stating that casino gaming in Massachusetts is "inevitable". Governor Deval Patrick took office with the plan of introducing casino gaming in the state.

However, Governor Patrick's 1st attempt was dismissed by state legislators. But the dismissal of his casino plan did not discouraged Governor Patrick from his goal of introducing casino gaming. This year, the governor received a major supporter in his quest for casino resorts. New Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo has taken a completely different stance to casino gaming than his predecessor, former House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi.

Speaker DeLeo fully supports Governor Patrick's plan for casino facilities in Massachusetts. Patrick also has the full support of Senate President Murray. A few weeks ago, both Murray and DeLeo publicly declared their support for casino gaming. Now, Murray has taken it up a notch.

Murray, when asked about the possibility of allowing slot machines at Massachusetts racetracks, said that she fully supports destination casinos but said that it is only her opinion. She added that it is also the belief of some other influential legislators in the Senate.

Governor Patrick still has much to accomplish if he is going to change the opinion of the House from last session. The House dismissed his previous gaming proposal for three resort casinos in a 108-46 vote. But Murray believes that she can help change those odds.

She said that even with the recession, they are seeing hundreds of million dollars spent by players from Massachusetts travelling to Connecticut and Rhode Island so she thinks that the gaming issue is definitely inevitable.
